Reading and Phonics

Reading is paramount at St Agnes. We use a variety of different reading schemes at St Agnes, to encourage children to develop their independent reading skills and their love of reading. Each book is levelled by colour to ensure children are reading at the appropriate stage, to facilitate their progress.

In EYFS they use variations of the Oxford Reading Tree scheme, such as: Songbirds and Snapdragons.  KS 1 and lower KS2 also use Oxford Reading Tree plus Project X, Bug Club and Lighthouse schemes; these are accompanied by some ‘real books’. Here is a link to some free texts: Oxford Owls texts. When the children reach upper KS2 they move onto Big Cat Collins texts. We have recently replenished these and it was wonderful to see how excited the children were. Eight free on-line apps  are available here: Big Cat Collins apps.

These schemes have been carefully chosen over the years to meet the needs of our cohort. We add to these throughout the year.

Children have an individual book banded reading book from these schemes. All children are assessed regularly to ensure that they are on the correct book band. EYFS have an additional lending library. Books can also be lent from our school library or class libraries.   Year 2 and KS2 visit the Longsight Library each half term to choose a book of interest to them. There are a variety of reading activities taking place throughout the year, to develop ‘reading for pleasure.’
