As part of MCRactive, several of the leisure centres in Manchester offer free swimming for children aged 16 or under during all school holidays..
This is an excellent resource that is often overlooked but can really provide your children with water confidence. As part of the National Curriculum children take part in swimming lessons when they are in Year 4.
The government have released new National Curriculum requirements that by the end of Year 6 all children should:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
By taking advantage of these free sessions you will be providing your child with experiences that will help them to achieve these requirements, allow them to enjoy their swimming lessons and help to alleviate any anxiety that our children often feel around their swimming lessons.
