Is it waterproof?

In Science  children have been exploring materials and their properties. They then conducted an experiment to test 3 different types of materials to see which one was waterproof. They tested paper, fabric and plastic. We discussed that when conducting a science experiment we have to ensure that it is a fair test. To do this we could only change one factor, this being the type of material. The size of the material, the cups, the elastic bands, the food colouring and the amount of water all remained the same. The children predicted what material would be best for a raincoat and why. We also discussed that as scientists we needed to look closely and make observations about what we could see when the water was poured onto each material. The children then came to a conclusion that the plastic was the best material to make a raincoat from as it was waterproof.
