2D/3D Shapes- Nets&Volume

Hi all, next week in maths we will be quickly revising identification and classification of shape, nets of 3D shapes and how to calculate the volume of a 3D shape. Take a look at the resources on this page to give you some ideas and support for next week.

Classifying Shapes-How do you sort and classify shapes?

To sort and classify shapes try applying some of the following questions:

What is the name of the shape?

What kind of shape is it and what are the properties of the shape?

Is it a polygon?
Is it a regular or irregular polygon?
Are all the sides of equal length and are all the angles equal?
How many sides are there?
Are there any parallel sides….. how many pairs of parallel sides?
Are there any perpendicular sides…..how many?
Are there any right angles…… how many?
(With triangles) Are there any obtuse or acute angles?
Are there any lines of symmetry…… how many?

Take a look at the posters below for examples of sorting and classifying:

NETS- What is a net?

Very simply a net is a 2D plan of a 3D Shape.
