Frozen Kingdom launch day.

Today Year 6 launched our new topic. We will be studying the Arctic and Antarctic. Because we could not go on a trip to the polar regions, we experienced some of what it is like in our school hall instead!

Here we are trying to fasten sleeping bags and coats wearing thick gloves! It was not easy.

We did some research into the similarities and differences between the two polar regions.

This is a ‘blubber glove.’ It simulates the layer of fat or blubber which lies beneath an animals skin to enable it to swim in the extremely cold sea temperatures. It was vegetable fat between two layers of plastic. It kept our hands warm.

We put an ‘iceberg’ in water and made some predictions as to which part would melt the fastest, the bit above or below the water. As you can see, the part below the water melted much more than the bit above. Can you explain why?

It was a great first day back in school.
