Maths-Place Value

A number is made of one or more digits. The number 683, for example, is made of the digits 6, 8 and 3. The position of a digit in a number is very important. A digit’s value depends on its position in the number. We use place value headings to work out the value of each digit in a number.

   The Place value Chart

In Year 6, you need to have a good knowledge of place value in order to work out the multiplication and division of decimals. For example, when working out 0.6 x 4, you would need to know that this is the same as working out 6 x 4 = 24, but then the answer needs to be divided by 10 (because 6 divided by 10 is 0.6) to make the answer 2.4.

Watch the video below for an expanded explanation of the place value system and then practise your skills on the website links or complete the range of worksheet activities.
