Art and Design
“Every human is an artist.” Miguel Ruiz
Art and Design allows children the opportunity to express their creativity by equipping them with knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. At St Agnes we follow a mastery approach to the Art and Design curriculum in order to achieve the expectations set out in the National Curriculum: “to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials.” In order to achieve this, our teaching and learning within Art and Design primarily focuses on these three areas: Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. Each child will cover these three areas over the course of each school year working on a progressive teaching model to allow for the children to further develop and refine their skills and technical ability. This further enables us to ensure that learning is continuous, and that the children make good progress with the development of their learning. Whilst the focus on developing and refining skills throughout the Art and Design curriculum is paramount to a mastery approach, the teaching sequence at St Agnes lends itself to forging meaningful links with other areas of the curriculum through our topic based approach. This further enables us to teach our children how “art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.” (National Curriculum 2014)
