Intent

At St Agnes, we believe that music is a powerful and universal language that enriches the lives of all our pupils. Our music curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, build confidence, and foster a lifelong love of music in every child.

Our music curriculum intends to:

  • Develop musical skills and knowledge - ensuring all pupils gain the technical and creative abilities to become confident musicians

  • Foster inclusion and accessibility - making sure every child, regardless of background or ability, can access and enjoy music

  • Build cultural capital - exposing pupils to a diverse range of musical styles, traditions and experiences

  • Support personal development - using music to develop confidence, self-expression, teamwork and resilience

Through our music curriculum, we aim to nurture confident, creative musicians who appreciate the power of music to bring joy, express emotion and connect communities.

We achieve our intent through a carefully structured and progressive approach to music education.

Curriculum structure:

We follow a carefully sequenced music curriculum that builds knowledge and skills progressively from Nursery to Year 6, ensuring that:

  • Learning builds systematically on prior knowledge

  • Pupils develop increasingly sophisticated musical skills year-on-year

  • All pupils receive at least 1 hour a week of high-quality curriculum music

  • Musical skills are revisited and deepened throughout their time at St Agnes
