Year
There was a lot to squeeze in on the day, so after lunch we split into two classes and either had a tour of the Library and its wonderful facilities or visited the fantastic exhibition by illustrator Nick Sharratt.
The children looked into the history of Manchester in the archives section of the Library and some children were lucky enough to find a large book which showed the history of Longsight residents from 1969. It was extremely interesting to find out who had lived in our homes before we lived in the area.
One child found a book that was written in the same year as the St Agnes’ C of E original school building was built, 1881. We looked through these books with great care as they are not only very old, but they have been kept in pristine condition for Manchester residents to use for research and historical purposes.
In the Nick Sharratt exhibition, Year 5 had the chance to take part in many fantastic activities, which you can see in some of the images below. They also learnt about Nick Sharratt’s family and how he had based some of his original illustrations on the work of LS Lowry. The boys particularly loved relaxing in the special reading area provided, which was filled with books that Nick had provided the illustrations for.
The trip was hugely successful and we cannot thank the National Literacy Trust enough for funding our visit, including our coach fare. It was a day to inspire our authors of the future and we can already see we have many children at St Agnes’ Cof E who are on certainly on their way down this fantastic career path!
All children received a free book from our sponsors WH Smith during the Library visit too. These books were chosen by the children before the trip and they had the chance to share their books throughout the day with their friends.
