Science Activity Day – Habitat Extremes

Can you design the most extreme habitat you can imagine?

If you could create a habitat for an extremophile (an organism that lives in an extreme environment), what would it look like? What challenges might the extremophile face?

Think about the following questions.

  • What are the most extreme living conditions they can think of?
  • What sorts of living conditions would pose a threat to animals you know?
  • Could a human live in your habitat? If not, why not?
  • How might an animal need to adapt in order to live there?

Now, draw your extreme habitat for the extremophile.

If you can, try and build the habitat. What could you use to build it? Try lego, an old shoe box, paper or plasticine.
